Past: The artifact I chose for my past is teaching Bitty Ball for the little kids at my school. I always loved to play basketball and did it year round. It was a big passion for me that taught me a lot about teamwork and friendships. I felt important to the team and I loved the fact that people depended on me for help in their success. I never got tired of it, didn't miss a practice, and even better, I got to play with my best friend. As I got older, we were able to help the little kids learn the game. I was all for this because I knew what it was like to be so young and excited to learn and grow. I was very passionate about it so I did a good job teaching them. This is when I learned that in order to be successful and good at what you do, you have to be passionate about it. I taught many kids and they grew to play all throughout school as well. My team also ended up being the first place in our division. Hard work and love for the sport helped me accomplish these goals. I'm passionate about teaching and helping students they way I was about helping the kids learn the game of basketball. I know I'll be a good teacher because I want to pass down what I've learned to help them learn and grow the same way I did.
Present: I have joined a couple clubs in college. One specifically has impacted me a lot. I joined Best Buddies because I am an Elementary Ed/Special Ed major. I one day want to have my own kindergarten class with inclusion of students with disabilities. I wanted to join this organization because I was worried about my lack of experience working with students with disabilities. I haven't had much exposure with it and am not totally confident with speaking to, let alone teaching, children with disabilities. This club has given me a lot of downtime with students with disabilities and has made me a lot more comfortable. I absolutely love spending time with the students and they have such a big impact on my mood. I am sure of this major now and know I'll be good at this. I think that this has helped my confidence in the field a lot and will help me be more confident when trying to get a job and further my education to lead to my career one day.
Future: I hope to one day have my own kindergarten classroom with inclusion of students with disabilities. I want my students to feel like they belong and have a sense of community. I hope to help my students the best I can and push them to do their best. I want to ensure my classroom will be available for any student, no matter what disabilities they may have and also to personalize my teaching and settings in a way that works for all of them. I want them to be comfortable in the classroom so I know they'll want to be there and will fully participate. I hope to have close relationships with my students and them to feel safe with me helping them and teaching them.
